Dame Eileen Atkins on ‘heritage’

Interviewed in the Christmas edition of Radio Times, and talking a lot of sense. My favourite excerpt:

“It’s pretentious to hang on to an accent to ‘show where I come from’. There’s such rot talked about roots. You are your own person. It’s horribly depressing to think all women become like their mothers. If life was just genetics, we might as well commit suicide now. It’s hilarious when people show off about lineage: their ancestors were probably murders, or got land by sucking up to the king or lying on their backs.”

Also pretty ace:

“I’m deeply immoral over some things. Wives should have affairs if they want. It can cheer a marriage no end.”
